What is Counselling?
The term can mean different things to different people, but in general, it is a process people seek when they want to change something in their lives or simply explore their thoughts and feelings in more depth.
Counselling provides you with a supportive, non-judgmental and confidential environment in which to explore any emotional and/or psychological difficulties you may be experiencing.
Counselling is not a medical treatment nor a quick fix or an easy formula. It is a process usually facilitated by a professional Counsellor to enable the individual to overcome difficult experiences.
The counsellor won't give you concrete advice or a checklist of things to do to feel better.
Counselling can assist you to identify your own personal resources and capabilities, which are sometimes lost or inaccessible during times of confusion and anxiety. In the counselling sessions, the client can explore their feelings and different aspects of their life, talking freely and openly in a way they sometimes cannot do with close friends or family.
Bottled up feelings such as anger, anxiety, grief and feelings of isolation, loneliness, issues with self-esteem can become very intense and counselling offers an opportunity to explore them, with a view to understanding them.
